Bengaluru: Services on Bengaluru’s Namma Metro Purple Line returned to normal after a major technical disruption left thousands of commuters stranded during peak hours, forcing some passengers to seek alternative transportation, including hitching rides on lorries and goods vehicles to reach their destinations.
The disruption occurred on the Purple Line, one of the busiest corridors in the Namma Metro network, connecting key parts of the city from east to west. The unexpected breakdown led to significant delays and overcrowding at several metro stations as passengers waited for services to resume.
Videos and images shared on social media showed frustrated commuters walking along station exits, waiting for buses, booking ride-hailing services, and in some cases accepting rides on passing lorries to get home. The incident highlighted the heavy dependence of Bengaluru residents on the metro system for daily travel.
According to officials, technical teams were immediately deployed to identify and rectify the fault. Metro authorities worked to restore operations as quickly as possible, and services gradually resumed across the affected stretch before returning to normal schedules.
The disruption triggered traffic congestion on major roads running parallel to the Purple Line as commuters shifted to buses, taxis, auto-rickshaws, and private vehicles. Several passengers reported extended travel times and difficulties securing transport during the evening rush hour.
Commuters took to social media to express their frustration over the inconvenience, with many urging authorities to strengthen backup systems and improve communication during service interruptions. Others praised metro staff for managing crowds and providing updates throughout the disruption.
The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) assured passengers that the issue had been resolved and that normal train operations had resumed. Officials also stated that a detailed assessment would be carried out to determine the cause of the breakdown and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Namma Metro has become a vital part of Bengaluru’s public transportation network, carrying lakhs of passengers every day. As the city continues to expand its metro infrastructure, ensuring reliable service remains critical for reducing road congestion and supporting urban mobility.
While normalcy has returned to the Purple Line, the incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by rapidly growing urban transit systems and the importance of robust contingency planning for unexpected disruptions.
