Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Urges PM Modi To Remove 11% Cotton Import Duty, Cites Threat To Jobs
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to remove the existing 11 percent import duty on cotton, warning that the levy is placing severe pressure on the state’s textile industry and threatening thousands of jobs.
In his appeal to the Centre, Vijay reportedly said that rising cotton prices and higher import costs are affecting textile manufacturers, exporters, and small-scale units across Tamil Nadu, one of India’s largest textile hubs.
He cautioned that continued duty-related cost pressures could weaken the competitiveness of Indian textile products in global markets and impact employment in the sector, particularly among workers dependent on spinning mills, garment factories, and allied industries.
The Chief Minister is understood to have requested immediate intervention from the Union government to support the textile industry, protect livelihoods, and ensure stability in cotton supply and pricing.
The issue comes at a time when the textile sector is already dealing with global demand fluctuations, rising production costs, and increasing competition from international manufacturers.
