India’s Biggest Offshore Energy Hunt: Modi Govt To Launch Massive Oil & Gas Survey | Exclusive

India is gearing up for one of its largest offshore oil and natural gas exploration drives in recent years, with survey vessels expected to begin extensive studies across the Bay of Bengal in a major effort to strengthen the country’s energy security.

According to government documents accessed by CNN-News18, the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons is planning a large-scale geological survey covering several offshore basins along India’s eastern coastline. The proposed exploration areas include the Bengal-Purnea, Mahanadi, Krishna-Godavari, Cauvery and Andaman regions.

The surveys are aimed at studying deep seabed structures to identify potential reserves of crude oil and natural gas that could play a key role in reducing India’s dependence on energy imports.

As part of the initiative, the government floated bids for the project on May 14, marking the beginning of a significant offshore exploration programme.
