PM Modi Leaves for Three-Day State Visit to Seychelles

New Delhi, June 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday departed for a three-day State Visit to Seychelles, where he will participate as the Guest of Honour at the island nation’s Golden Jubilee National Day celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of its Independence. The visit, scheduled from June 27 to June 29, underscores India’s growing strategic partnership with the Indian Ocean nation.

The visit comes at the invitation of Seychelles President Patrick Herminie and also commemorates 50 years of diplomatic relations between India and Seychelles. During his stay, Prime Minister Modi is expected to hold high-level bilateral talks with President Herminie to review the full spectrum of cooperation between the two countries, including maritime security, defence, trade, development assistance, climate resilience, healthcare, education, and digital connectivity.

Focus on Maritime Security and Regional Cooperation

Ahead of his departure, Prime Minister Modi described Seychelles as a “valued maritime neighbour” and an important partner under India’s Vision MAHASAGAR, emphasizing New Delhi’s commitment to ensuring peace, security, and prosperity across the Indian Ocean Region. He expressed confidence that the visit would further strengthen the long-standing friendship between the two nations.

Maritime cooperation remains one of the cornerstones of India-Seychelles relations. Reports indicate that India is expected to hand over a patrol vessel to Seychelles during the visit, reinforcing the island nation’s maritime surveillance and coastal security capabilities.

National Day Celebrations

Prime Minister Modi will attend the Seychelles National Day Parade alongside several international dignitaries. A contingent of the Indian Armed Forces and two Indian Navy ships will also participate in the celebrations, reflecting the close defence ties between the two countries.

In addition to official engagements, the Prime Minister is expected to inaugurate development projects, oversee the handover of Indian-assisted initiatives, interact with the Indian diaspora, participate in cultural events, and become the first Indian Prime Minister to address the National Assembly of Seychelles.

Why the Visit Matters

India considers Seychelles a key strategic partner in the western Indian Ocean due to its geographic location along critical maritime trade routes. Over the years, New Delhi has supported Seychelles through infrastructure development, defence cooperation, capacity building, healthcare initiatives, and humanitarian assistance.

The visit is expected to deepen cooperation in:

  • Maritime and coastal security
  • Defence and strategic partnerships
  • Blue Economy initiatives
  • Climate change and sustainable development
  • Trade and investment
  • Digital public infrastructure
  • Healthcare and education

Analysts believe the visit will reinforce India’s role as a trusted development partner in the Indian Ocean and strengthen regional stability amid evolving geopolitical dynamics.

Looking Ahead

Prime Minister Modi’s Seychelles visit is expected to give fresh momentum to bilateral relations while reaffirming India’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with its maritime neighbours. As both countries celebrate five decades of diplomatic ties, the visit is likely to result in enhanced cooperation across strategic, economic, and developmental sectors.
