Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday made strong remarks in the Lok Sabha regarding the escalating tensions in West Asia, asserting that the safety of Indians remains the government’s “top priority” while warning that any disruption in the Strait of Hormuz would be “completely unacceptable” for global stability and economic security.
Addressing Parliament amid growing concerns over the Iran-Israel conflict and its impact on global trade routes, PM Modi said India is closely monitoring developments in the Gulf region and taking all necessary measures to safeguard Indian citizens and national interests.
“Security of Indians anywhere in the world is our top priority,” the Prime Minister said, emphasizing that the government is maintaining constant coordination with embassies, diplomatic missions, and regional authorities.
PM Modi also underlined the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest oil shipping routes through which a major portion of global energy supplies passes. He warned that any disruption to maritime movement in the region could seriously affect international trade, fuel prices, and economic stability.
“Disruptions in Hormuz are unacceptable. The world economy and energy security depend on stability in the region,” he told the Lok Sabha.
The Prime Minister noted that India has strong ties with countries across West Asia and continues to support dialogue, diplomacy, and peaceful resolution of conflicts. He reiterated India’s consistent position that escalation benefits no one and that regional peace is essential for global prosperity.
According to government estimates, millions of Indians live and work in Gulf countries, making the region critically important for India’s economic and strategic interests. The Gulf also accounts for a significant share of India’s crude oil and gas imports.
PM Modi said the government has activated contingency planning and emergency coordination systems to respond swiftly if the situation deteriorates further. Officials are reportedly in touch with shipping operators, airlines, and international partners to assess evolving risks linked to the conflict.
The Prime Minister also assured Parliament that India is prepared to take every necessary step to protect trade routes, ensure energy supplies, and assist Indian nationals if evacuation or emergency support becomes necessary.
His remarks come amid heightened global concerns over possible threats to commercial shipping and energy infrastructure in the Gulf region following rising military tensions between Iran and Israel.
Political leaders across party lines largely supported the government’s emphasis on protecting Indian citizens and maintaining regional stability, though opposition members also sought detailed clarification on contingency measures and diplomatic outreach.
Experts believe PM Modi’s statements signal India’s intent to balance strategic neutrality with proactive diplomatic engagement while safeguarding critical economic and security interests in the Middle East.
