Doha, Qatar: A powerful explosion and subsequent fire struck Qatar’s strategically important Barzan gas facility at Ras Laffan Industrial City on Sunday, leaving at least 54 people injured and 18 others missing, according to Qatari authorities. Emergency response teams were swiftly deployed to contain the blaze and launch rescue operations.
The incident occurred during the restart of operations at the Barzan facility, one of Qatar’s key domestic gas supply plants. Qatar’s Interior Ministry described the event as a technical accident, stating that there was no immediate threat to public safety despite the scale of the explosion.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud blast across parts of Doha, while videos circulating online appeared to show a large fireball rising from the industrial complex. Authorities later confirmed that the fire had been brought under control, though search-and-rescue efforts for the missing workers remain ongoing.
The Barzan gas facility plays a crucial role in Qatar’s energy infrastructure, supplying approximately 1.4 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day to domestic industries and power-generation facilities. The plant also produces condensates, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), ethane, and sulfur for both local use and export markets.
Located within Ras Laffan Industrial City, the facility forms part of Qatar’s vast LNG ecosystem. Ras Laffan serves as the country’s primary hub for liquefied natural gas production and exports, with an annual capacity of roughly 77 million metric tons across multiple LNG trains.
The explosion comes just months after Ras Laffan suffered significant damage during regional military tensions that affected critical energy infrastructure in the Gulf. Industry analysts warn that any prolonged disruption at the site could have implications for global natural gas markets, given Qatar’s position as one of the world’s leading LNG exporters.
QatarEnergy has not yet released a detailed assessment of damage to the Barzan facility. Investigators are expected to examine the cause of the explosion as authorities continue rescue operations and monitor the site’s operational status.
The incident has renewed concerns about the resilience of critical energy infrastructure in the region and the potential impact of industrial accidents on global energy supply chains.
