In Rare Feat, Mother-Son Duo From Haryana Elected Mayors In UK Within A Week

A family originally from Haryana has achieved a remarkable milestone in the United Kingdom, with both a mother and her son being elected mayors in two separate British councils within a span of just one week. The achievement has drawn attention in both India and the UK, highlighting the growing influence of the Indian diaspora in British public life.

The mother-son duo, Parveen Rani and Tushar Kumar, belong to a family that moved from Rohtak in Haryana to the UK in 2013. While Tushar Kumar was elected Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council on May 13, his mother Parveen Rani became Mayor of Hertsmere Borough Council a week later on May 20.

At just 23 years old, Tushar Kumar has also made history as the youngest Indian-origin mayor in the UK. Before becoming mayor, he had already gained recognition for entering public service at a young age, having earlier served as a councillor while studying in London.

According to family members, the journey from Haryana to Britain was not planned with politics in mind. Tushar’s father, Sunil Dahiya, said the family had moved abroad in search of better opportunities and gradually became deeply involved in community service and local governance. Their continued connection to their roots in Haryana remains strong, with the family visiting India regularly.

Parveen Rani is known for her work in community engagement, education, and cultural initiatives, while Tushar Kumar has focused on youth participation and public service. His message to young people has been clear — age should never become a barrier to leadership or social contribution.

The achievement is being celebrated as a proud moment for the Indian community abroad and especially for Haryana, as it reflects the increasing representation of people of Indian origin in international political institutions. Observers say the success story of this family also symbolizes the power of integration, education, and civic participation in multicultural societies like the UK.
