Yoon’s Martial Law Bid Political Suicide? South Korea President Faces Impeachment Over ‘Treason’
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol lifted a surprise martial law on Dec. 4 just hours after he imposed it on Dec. 3. In a dramatic, late-night address, Yoon accused the opposition of paralysing the government with “anti-state activities” before announcing an emergency. It was the first time a South Korean President had declared martial law since the military dictatorship ended in the late 1980s.Following Yoon’s decree, security forces sealed the country’s parliament. Security helicopters landed on the roof and troops entered the building in a bid to prevent lawmakers from getting inside. However, 190 lawmakers managed to enter and voted unanimously to reject Yoon’s declaration and called for martial law to be lifted. Outside, hundreds of protesters gathered, many raising chants calling for Yoon to be arrested. Following the lawmakers’ vote, Yoon backed down and approved the motion to lift the order. n18oc_world n18oc_crux0:00 INTRODUCTION2:16 YOON Vs OPPOSITION OVER BUDGET3:35 WHAT NEXT FOR YOON?6:05 HOW WERE SOUTH KOREA’S DOCTORS INVOLVED IN THE POLITICAL UPHEAVAL?7:32 JAPAN MONITORING S.
