South Korea's Yoon Defiant After Impeachment Over Martial Law Bid, Celebrations Erupt In Seoul

South Korean lawmakers impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol over his failed martial law bid, with the opposition declaring a “victory of the people.” Under the constitution, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who was appointed by Yoon, became the acting president. The motion was passed after some of Yoon’s People Power Party members joined the opposition, surpassing the two-thirds majority in the 300-seat assembly. The number of lawmakers supporting impeachment was 204, with 85 against, three abstentions and eight invalid ballots.
