India's Remarkable Journey: From Open Defecation Shame to a Cleaner Tomorrow

India has made significant progress in eradicating open defecation through initiatives like the Swachh Bharat Mission, benefiting 450 million people by 2019. However, challenges persist in ensuring consistent toilet usage and hygiene practices, especially among the poorest communities. Poor sanitation impacts workforce health, education, and overall well-being, while inadequate water and sanitation in healthcare facilities contribute to high neonatal mortality rates. UNICEF collaborates with the Government of India on various programs to address these challenges, emphasizing behavior change, gender integration, and monitoring and evaluation. Efforts span rural and urban areas, aiming to provide essential WASH services as a fundamental right for children.
