‘Down to nothing’: Dry, heavy winds stoke growing California wildfires
The largest by far, the Dixie fire, has charred nearly 1,000 square miles (2,590 square km) of the Sierras northeast of San Francisco since mid-July, including more than 30,000 acres (12,140 hectares) consumed between Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire).
