PM Modi To Visit Australia In ‘Near Future’, Says Foreign Minister Penny Wong After Quad Meet

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong has said that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Australia in the “near future,” signalling continued momentum in ties between the two countries following the recent Quad foreign ministers’ meeting.

The announcement came after discussions involving members of the Quad grouping — India, Australia, the United States, and Japan — where leaders focused on regional security, economic cooperation, maritime stability, and Indo-Pacific partnerships.

Strengthening India-Australia Relations

Speaking after the Quad meeting, Wong highlighted the growing strategic partnership between India and Australia, describing bilateral ties as stronger than ever. She noted that both countries are expanding cooperation in areas such as trade, clean energy, defence, technology, education, and critical minerals.

The proposed visit by PM Modi is expected to further deepen diplomatic and economic engagement between the two nations. Officials from both sides are reportedly working on the schedule and agenda for the visit.

Quad Focuses On Indo-Pacific Stability

The Quad meeting also centred on maintaining a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region amid rising geopolitical tensions. Ministers discussed maritime security, resilient supply chains, cyber security, infrastructure development, and emerging technologies.

India has increasingly become a key strategic partner for Australia as Canberra looks to strengthen alliances and diversify economic partnerships across the Indo-Pacific region.

Growing Strategic Cooperation

Over the past few years, India and Australia have significantly expanded defence and security cooperation through joint military exercises, intelligence sharing, and maritime collaboration. The Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement between the two countries has also boosted bilateral trade and investment flows.

PM Modi’s expected Australia visit is likely to include high-level meetings with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, business leaders, and members of the Indian diaspora community.

Diaspora And Economic Importance

Australia is home to a large and rapidly growing Indian-origin community, which has emerged as an important bridge between the two countries. Education and skilled migration have also become major pillars of bilateral relations.

Analysts believe the upcoming visit could lead to fresh agreements in sectors including renewable energy, digital technology, higher education, and critical supply chains.

The timing of the visit is expected to be finalised through diplomatic channels in the coming weeks, but Wong’s remarks indicate that preparations are already underway for another significant milestone in India-Australia relations.
