Modi Govt Cuts Subsidised LPG Cylinders Under Ujjwala From 9 To 4 Refills

The Central Government has reportedly reduced the number of subsidised LPG cylinder refills available under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) from nine per year to four. The move is expected to impact millions of low-income households across India who depend on the scheme for affordable cooking gas.

According to reports, beneficiaries under the Ujjwala scheme will now receive subsidy support on only four LPG refills annually instead of the earlier nine cylinders. The decision comes amid rising subsidy costs and efforts by the government to rationalise expenditure.

The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana was launched to provide free LPG connections to economically weaker households, especially women in rural areas, with the aim of promoting clean cooking fuel and reducing dependence on firewood and traditional fuels.

The reduction in subsidised refills has sparked concern among consumers and opposition leaders, who argue that the move could increase the financial burden on poor families already struggling with inflation and rising household expenses.

Government officials, however, have maintained that India continues to provide LPG at comparatively affordable rates despite fluctuations in global energy prices. They also highlighted that targeted subsidies are being continued for eligible beneficiaries.

Many Ujjwala beneficiaries say the higher cost of LPG cylinders has already forced families to reduce usage or return to traditional cooking methods in some areas. Consumer groups are now demanding a review of the latest decision and restoration of additional subsidised refills.

The development has triggered widespread discussion on social media, with debates focusing on fuel affordability, welfare policies, and the overall impact on rural households.

Further clarification from the government regarding implementation details and subsidy eligibility is expected in the coming days.
