North Korea test-fired a ballistic missile as the top US diplomat met officials in Seoul, South Korea said on Jan. 6. “North Korea sent unknown ballistic missile towards the East Sea,” South Korea’s military said.The missile flew around 1,100 kilometres (680 miles), the South Korean military said. The North Korean missile appeared to have fallen into the sea, Japanese officials said. The Jan. 6 launch took place while the outgoing US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was on a visit to South Korea.In response, South Korea fired a ballistic missile into the sea in a show of force in response to Pyongyang’s salvo of missile launches. South Korea said it had “strengthened surveillance and vigilance” for more launches. Seoul was also “in close coordination with the US and Japan” about the launch, the South Korean military added.The missile launch, the first this year, came just two weeks before US President-elect Donald Trump’s takeover.The US Secretary of State, who was visiting the South Korean capital at the time of the launch, slammed the move by Pyongyang.
